I would keep the new account as you never know when you're going to need it.

As for what happened, I have no idea. I did the iTunes update myself, as
probably did a million other users, with no harm. I'm really at a loss to
explain what could have happened. This kind of update usually doesn't need
to change anything in the system, just the iTunes application itself, so I
can't see anything that could have screwed up your account so badly.
