You've certainly got a peculiar problem, and quite possibly the answer in there, about minute variances in internal power tolerances, possibly just a mechanical issue with the connectors. A logical error on the drive wouldn't change from one computer to the other.

The only thing I could think of is some really strange stuff to do with the drive controller of one model versus the other, like a bug in the firmware.

The quick fix, of course, is just leave the drives where they are working.
