Random freezes are often caused by electronic components that start failing when they get warmer. This includes memory and processors. If your case is cracked, it is possible that the logic board was damaged. That would be very hard to diagnose. I would try with the memory, removing any extra memory and keeping only the original one. If not, it is quite possible that the "dirt" you mention on the processor where it contacts the heat sink might be just enough to increase the heat in the processor to a point where the processor fails because it's too hot. Have you heard the fan on your Pismo running on occasions? That would be a sign that the temperature increases above normal. On my Pismo, the fan was almost never running. I also remember once when I did replace something in it that I didn't firmly put the heat sink over the processor. Over a few minutes, the fan was starting to run, although it never did before. That told me that something was wrong inside. The heat sink needs to kinda "snap" around the processor very tightly for the heat dissipation to work... -Laurent. -- ============================================================================ Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelin <http://nemesys.dyndns.org> Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] fascist adj.: [common] Said of a computer system with excessive or annoying security barriers, usage limits, or access policies.
