Consequential damage from any type of impact can cause hidden
damage that may not appear for some time. A hard drive or optical
drive failure may be the worst things that could happen but would
you want to even play with that possibility ??

The SuperDrive was replaced at a later stage, maybe because of the "drop" but we'll never know. In any case, it's newer than the accident.

I am actually considering replacing the HD for speed purposes anyway.
---
I would suggest the original poster avoid the damaged laptop like
the plague

That'd be me... :o) ---
and either get another used one

For that price it won't have AirPort Xtreme, Superdrive and 768MB RAM. ---
that is still eligible for Applecare (the damaged one obviously is not)

I wouldn't spend the money... ---
or buy a new one.

The AlBook is 50% out of my budget.

...and now I know I don't like the iBook...
