Range varies greatly based on the base station and the card you are
using.  On occasion I have had multiple 802.11b cards with me and some
would work where I was while others would not even see the base.  The
last time I checked (about 3 months ago) the two most powerful (longest
range) base stations were the Netgear WGT624 and the Linksys WRT54g
(with 3rd party firmware).
