If you don't know about the "Performa Years" then the current situation could seem unruly, yes.
Apple offers two model lines: 2 ibooks that use many common components, and three powerbooks, which also use many common components.
IBM has four product lines in the think pad series, offering a bunch of different configurations in each, although each model uses common components.
Dell offers 4 'Inspiron' laptops, all different styles, 4 Latitude models, in two different styles and 2 Precision models (only one style).
Apple has a simpler model line than any other major manufacturer out there.
