As I understand it, despite being called "laptops," they want to run on hard surfaces. To quote the manual to my Aluminum PB:
"Do not place your PowerBook on a pillow or other soft material when it is on, as the material may block the airflow vents, in particular the rear vents, and cause the computer to overheat."
I also gather that the bottom of the computer gets warm and the heat can't escape when on such a soft surface.
Anything one can do to help the computer run cooler is virtuous and leads to longer life for it. One solution might be to customize a laptop stand to use on the bed, giving a little air space between the laptop and the cloth surface.

Normally I hardly hear the fan on my 333mhz Lombard, but sometimes after
using it for awhile on my lap or bed the fan suddenly gets louder and warm
air is pushed out the left side. This has not yet happened while using it
on a desk. At first I'd panic and shut down as soon as possible. When I
grew tired of this I started keeping it on but moving it onto a desk.
Normally the exhaust fan then stops after a few minutes.
I suppose this is the computer's way of cooling itself when getting too hot? My question is, is this a normal thing I can ignore, or is it a warning to shut down for awhile?
