Well, since airwaves can go pretty much anywhere and can be received by any people within range, all wireless protocols now have some kind of security layer where you have to authenticate before you can get access. So, if your coffee shop's wireless router isn't setup for any security, you'll be fine. If not, you'll have to find a way to provide the password to join their wireless network.
