Re my distorted screen problem, and following on from your much appreciated responses, it turns out my 1998 Wallstreet is a 14.1 inch screen. (I understand the Wallstreet 13.3 inch screen model has recognised problems with its cables but not usually the case with the 14.1 inch screen.)
The symptoms are the same, so I'm going to stick to the diagnosis of a bad cable or cable connection. Better than the alternative, which is that the video ram is failing, in which case it's new logic board time for you.
