Another possibility is that the system folder has been corrupted, one of the file in it is damaged. Maybe the system file itself... Kristina: for USB enclosures, check DealMac.com for a USB deal. Remember that you need an enclosure for a 2.5" drive. Although, if the drive is really damaged, it might not be worth to get an enclosure since you won't be able to do anything with the drive.
