I had a wonderful scanner in OS 9 that didn't have a driver when I went to OS X. Microtek offered a workaround for the ScanMaker 4900, but I didn't want a "workaround" so I waited until their next big thing came along, and bought the ScanMaker i320. I've tried three times over the past year to install the software, but it's just full of bugs. In fact, when I press the button on the front of the scanner to just do a scan, my dock shows that it is trying to open OS 9. In fact, I don't even have OS 9 or Classic on my PowerBook. It seems that this is the underlying problem, that maybe the new drivers aren't totally OS X native.

After having deleted everything several weeks ago, today was my third attempt to download the software and make it work. I was able to scan some photos, but each scan seemed to do something different in the process. The first scan generated an unopenable document with a blank document icon. The second scan created an icon that said "TIFF" while the third and fourth scan created an icon that was a thumbnail of the photo. The fifth scan began a very long process that I couldn't quit or even force quit. I finally had to pull the battery.

Is anyone having success with Microtek scanners? I LOVED mine when I used OS 9. This scanner has something called Ice, which is a feature for photo restoration. Also, is anyone having wonderful success with their scanner? I really want one with some of the bells and whistles, at least.

Thanks,
Claire
