The USB adapter VER. B1 uses Ralink. All I have been able to find is VER. A1. Even the B1 needs a hack to the string for the extension to load. On the bright side, it is the only one I have found that shows any promise of working.

Concur in your statement on chip set. That is why I am interested in
what g experienced. Must have been a Broadcom Chip Set. Hopefully the
VER. will reveal. I am also experimenting with USB WiFI adapters. So
far same outcome.

I've just checked the Ralink site and they have drivers for their chipset, including a "usb" version... this seems to indicate that some usb wifi adapters may work with this driver if they use the Ralink chipset. The problem is that usually the vendors do not provide information about the chipset they use (likely because they do change them or want at least to reserve that option).
