Makes sense. One thing that I neglected to consider is that not everyone prefers to view mail in the preview pane; some like to view in a separate window. I rarely, if ever, open mail in separate windows, but I can see how the inability of Mail to provide forward/ back functionality (keystrokes or buttons) might be frustrating in that circumstance.
