Thanks, Bruce - this is exactly what I needed to know. I've been holding back from a massive research initiative to investigate whether the drive is working 100% properly. Will keep an eye open for quality media and leave it be. What the heck, my iPod pretty much has substituted CDs in my cars anyway. Managed to rig hardwire inputs.

Commercial audio disks are different creatures entirely than CD-R or
CD-RW disks! Your car player may simply have trouble with CD-r or -rw
disks.

If changing the burn speed changes how the disks behave in your car,
then most likely it's your disks. try different brands; you may have to
try several different brands.

The last thing I'd suspect would be the drive, unless you're getting a
lot of coasters out of it.
