Howdy:

I just hooked up a Brother 5440CN and they do, in fact, have new drivers for 10.4. Not only that but they actually have a Dashboard widget that will give you a status update on your printer... unfortunately it apparently only works on USB and I'm hooked in via ethernet so it doesn't work for me. Hopefully, Brother will fix it relatively soon.

I don't where the previous poster heard that Brother is no longer going to support the Mac but I question this info. Brother has historically been very responsive in getting out drivers for their printers for the Mac.

We have an HP 3330 we bought a couple years ago in our office and then we bought a Brother laser MFC shortly thereafter... the Brother blows the HP away. The HP is cumbersome, slow, flakes out and requires unplugging on a regular basis, etc., etc. Plus the HP software drivers are always crap... even when they work they actually work they are slow and however they are coding them, whenever there is a system upgrade it breaks the software. I am NOT an HP fan (although we do have a number of HP lasers that we use).

The Brother's are typical of current printers in that they are all plastic and seem pretty flimsy but we've had good luck running over the past several years and the software always seem up to par.

Interesting point re. Brother. I went to their web site and they actually seem to be the first out the door with specific 10.4 software!
Good point re. receiving faxes with the Mac and OS X, but if I'm not mistaken, you have to have it connected to the phone line. That wasn't an option I was planning on, but if worst came to worst...
Any idea if you can receive faxes in 10.3 or 10.4 on a DSL line?

The Brother 5840cn still looks pretty good, though is $200. I've also found the HP 5510 at around $125, so about $75 cheaper. HP has a reputation for expensive ink, but the cartridges are a lot cheaper on ebay.

Re. using an MFC with an Airport Express, IIRC there was once a site that listed compatible USB printers/MFCs, but I can't find it any more. Anyone?
