Based, unfortunately, on personal experience, you have a slowly dying power cable. You have about 8 months (give or take) from the when the problem initially began. To avoid buying an overpriced Apple replacement part, check web sites for a replacement cable.

When you say power cable, which part do you mean ?

My adapter only has the psu with cable and the plug that
plugs into 230V, not the long mains cable.

???
You will need to replace the unit that runs from the Book to the adapter. On my unit, the cable from the adapter to the electric plug works fine. Because I dawdled on buying a replacement cable, I had to shell out $85 for a replacement Apple power cable. Hence, I have 2 units that have the long electric plug but only 1 cable that runs from the Book to the adapter.

On the bright side, I unplug the cable at the adapter source and put the Book and the adapter into my bag because I keep one long electric cable at the house, one long electric cable at the office, and the plug only in my bag (just in case).
