I was planning on eBaying my 500 G3 iBook for quite some time and have even replaced it with a 1.2 G4 iBook with 1.25 gigs of RAM, but can't find it in me to get rid of the beast. The 500 really is a great machine in many ways, runs Tiger almost acceptably (if you use Safari and not Firefox or the like), and is superior to my G4 iBook in two ways: 1.) Awfully easy to display Powerpoints/presentations on TV. One A/V cord and you're rolling. 2.) Doesn't bend. Had to trade in my first G4 iBook because it became bent just lugging it in my laptop case around campus. Warped so that it wouldn't sit straight and then started locking up. Nice. I'm overly careful with its replacement, but it bends like putty if you're not careful too. At the same time, I've considered pitching the 500 to LEM as a Road Apple. Why? The main gripe is that Road Apples are supposed to be examples of machines hobbled with no good reason for the hobbling -- like the ADB-less Powerbook 150 that's otherwise a good machine. The first few iBook dual USBs can't, even with the firmware hack, span monitors. Makes the iBook a true roadie-only. My G4 right now is putting out 1280x1024 on an external and 1024x768 on its on screen. *Very* nice. 1024x768 is great for an entry-level 'book, but isn't enough real estate to make me as productive as I could be when in the office. There really isn't any reason any iBook shouldn't be displaying on two monitors, or at least allowing for a larger "virtual desktop" and higher resolutions on externals if mirroring. This would make the iBook a real desktop replacement. The fact that 500s can't do it even with a hack drives me crazy. Add to that that the 500 really isn't *quite* fast enough to run OS X and sure as heck ain't doing iMovie and iDVD worth much and, well, I think you have a decent Road Apple case. (Yes, I realize Apple is trying to sell Powerbooks, etc, but the hobbling is what drives me mad.) /rant Ruffin Bailey -- This message sent by an unregistered version of The Digest Handler.
