I think I found it, see below.

If you find out, please let me know. My G4 gets awfully hot on the bottom, which distorts the image on the laptop. Oddly enough, if I have an external monitor, the distortion on the screen does not extend to the external monitor. Rather, it appears only on the laptop's screen.

A while back I read of a means to reset the vid ram, or something similar that seemed to help this problem a while back. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and know what the procedure is to do this?

Tim,

No, I only use it on table top surfaces and it just gets too hot after awhile to use. It has already been evaluated once by Apple and they sent me a new battery (even though the old one was not on the recall list). That seemed to make a significant difference but then when I installed Tiger just after it was released, the heat issues returned.

Apple flatly denies that it could have anything to do with Tiger and stated it was simply coincidental but at the same time, they have not been able to come up with any other reason. I am not sure what the problem is. Right now, it feel quite cool and I've been on it for 10 minutes but within another 20-30 minutes I will not be able to use it.

Check out this article, I think this is what worked for me before. If it doesn't work or has no bearing, no harm no foul:
