It's pretty straightforward, installing a fresh System, and creating a folder called "Previous System" (numbered if you already have one of those). All user folders/settings are supposedly kept, and the only things you'll need to deal with are programs that put some preference files or application support files in the System folder (rather than in your Home folder's Library).
Some applications will have to be installed from the original disks, and sometimes you can copy over the relevant files from a backup or from the Previous System folder.
