Great - another piece of proprietary equipment one can only buy from
the computer manufacturer and costing twice as much thereby. No
thanks - I like that I can go to Microcenter and find the surge
protector that meets my needs and will protect my computer, printer,
router, modem, and scanner as well.
Just to put another slant on this thread, there are limits to what
your surge protection can do with conventional surges, unless it
incorporates an isolation transformer. If your surge protector has an
isolation transformer, you'll be able to tell because it will be a
very heavy device (20 to 40 pounds and up). With an isolation
transformer you get serious protection, but it won't be cheap. Though
the rating schemes for surge protectors, one figure to look at is the
number of Joules of energy it can absorb. This is not a perfect way
to compare devices, but it's a good start, if they have been kind
enough to print the rating on the box.
