No, you're right.  I didn't know if you had an old drive or a new one.

It seems to be a problem with booting from the cd. I
can do it with the old drive, but not the new.

No. The computer should be able to boot from the CD as long as it can read it. The computer will look for a boot volume. When it doesn't find one it should flash the folder icon with a '?' (OS X) or the sad Mac (OS 9). If you tell it to boot from the CD by holding down the 'c' button, I think it should boot.

Maybe there is something wrong with the new drive.

Could be. Do you have access to another HD, other than the old one, to swap out? See David Lesher's comments; try A then B.
