Others have mentioned suitable replacement drives for the Pismo. What about the Sony CRX820E?

The Matshita SR-8174-C drive and sled (you'll need both) is the other major OEM drive that was used on the Pismo and will fit perfectly.

The SR-8174-C 6X Mfgd 2000 (Pismo) and the SR-8173-C ?X Mfgd 1999 (Lombard) both seem to work well. I've replaced both with up-to-date writeable and rewriteable drives, with good success, except for cosmetics.
