If it's an LG drive, it's probably gone the way of most pismo LG drives.

When mine died (again) recently, the system log showed a lot of
instances of the error 'IOATAController device blocking bus' in the
weeks leading up to its demise, even when it appeared to be working
fine. So that might confirm the diagnosis.
