Subject: G3 Lombard
I'm new to this list, so please bear with the newbie question. Are
there
any major issues with the 400 MHz Lombard, such as logic board failure,
or anything like that? I've got one coming in, and I want to have a
heads-up before I have any problems. Also, does the DVD playback work
under OS X Jaguar or Panther?
Thanks in advance,
Caleb

The major weakness with the Lombard is a weakness in the L2 cache chip
(a memory chip on the processor card). The L2 cache gives the CPU a
place to store bits nearby without sending them all the way to the RAM
chips so it allows the CPU to get more done.
The L2 failure has been attributed to heat so keeping your Lombard cool
may help.
If the L2 cache is bad you will get a warning on start up:
"the built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance"
In OS9 Apple system profiler will report "External L2 cache: Not
Installed" if the cache is bad.
In OS 10.3.9 (panther) About This Mac will take you to the system
profiler (click on "More Info") where it will report "L2 Cache (per
CPU) 1MB" if the cache is good.
My 400 MHz Lombard with the bad L2 cache plays DVDs fine.
DVD playback should definately work under OS9, with a 400 MHz
motherboard all you need is the DVD drive, with a 333 MHz motherboard
you need a DVD drive and a DVD decoder card that plugs into the PC card
slot. To tell which motherboard you have check the label on the
underside of the case. A 333 MHz motherboard with a 400 MHz CPU won't
play DVDs without the decoder card.
I understand that Lombards won't play DVDs under OSX but I can't check
that since the Lombard I have running Panther is a 333 MHz model with
no decoder card. When I put a DVD into the OEM 6X DVD drive it shows up
on the desktop and I can see the files on it but when I open Apple DVD
Player it shifts over to Classic mode (OS9 emulator) then gives me an
error message
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because the required hardware was not
found".
I think this means the decoder card is missing but I'm not sure.
Good Luck
