I am just saying that in many instances (and a point of sale system is a great example) they are slower.

actually, POS systems are ideal candidates for a GUI, just not one that requires a mouse; this is what touch screens are for.

But I sympathize with your thought "Use the TAB key, Luke!"...worse, I'll wager that the application your talking about supports it, even has carefully laid out tab-key navigation, but people are so conditioned to using a mouse, they continue doing so even when better alternatives exist.

I mean, I show people in the login screen in Windows all the time. "Look, shift-tab moves up to the username field, and select the old name, just type in your name, hit the tab key and type in the password. Now hit enter." Bing, bang, boom.

It's painful seeing them slowly mouse up to the username field, aim and click a few times before they get the edit bar at the end of the name in there and slowly hitting the delete key one at a time to delete the username in the field.

They're astonished that it works, and they forget about it before I leave their office.

I'm slowly larnin' them, though. As they come in with some issue or another, mostly forgotten passwords I make 'em use my system. They get a little confused seeing a Windows screen in the middle of my monitor, then really confused when they see my Kensington trackball with four buttons.

:-)

That slows then down long enough to absorb "hit the tab key".

It's odd. Only Windows users seem to have this problem. All of my Mac users get it right away.
