if it's HOT, i.e. too hot to touch comfortably, unplug it now, quickly.
if it's that hot then probably the only reason you haven't had a fire is
the use of flameproof resistors. if the smell is new and the heat is
new i'd definitely take it off line immediately, before a fire starts or
more damage is done to the monitor. it might be a simple fix, it might
not, it's hard to tell before you open it but if it still functions but
just gets hot it's probably not too hard to fix, not that any repair is
cheap if you have to pay someone to do it. some monitors have to be
unpluged from the wall to turn off all the electronics, so just turning
it off might or might not disconect the parts with problems. sorry,
without a tech it's probably toast. if you're close to chicago i've had
great luck with kmr tech, if you're far away it may not be worth the
shipping. then again, they sold me a beutiful 21" nec monitor, 5 years
old but rebuilt and in great shape for <$600 including shipping. i
haven't tried there repair service but they sound pretty good and do
offer a warranty. they were great when ups destroyed the first monitor.
it was well packed but ups attacked it with a fork lift!
