Thanks to Andrew and to the others for the good suggestions. After I
learned that my old SCSI external drive is not big enough for OS X, I
decided that the old scanner is not worth keeping. I'm having to run Norton
on my 6300 system again because the scanner software is broken. So I'll buy
a new USB or FireWire scanner that should be better than the old one. And
hopefully, this simplifies the system.
