>lombard powerbook (firewire, dvd)
Isnt the FireWire PowerBook a Pismo??No Matter it should work the same.

I have a 500MHz FireWire PowerBook and use it as my home DVD player, also to
play Games, QuickTime Movies, etc on my big screen TV.

First you must connect it physically......
There are a couple of different ways to do it.
What connections do you have on the TV,
1. S-Video (round looks like Apples old serial/printer port)
2. RCA (round with a single hole, like on a stereo system)
3. Cable/Antenna (The basic threaded silver cable connection)
The PowerBook has a S-video connector on the back for Video, and includes an
adapter to convert it to RCA Video.
For sound you will need an 1/8"(headphone) jack -> RCA connector adapter.
If you TV has S-Video just get an S-Video cable and connect it, and use the
18"->RCA adapter and cable for your sound.
If your TV has RCA jacks connect it that way using Apples adapter and the
sound adapter.
If your TV only has the single "Cable" connection, you will need something
for converting the signal. (i.e. I use the VCR when the hotel, resort has
cheap TV's) Using the RCA connectors connect the PowerBook to VCR and the
VCR to the TV (The VCR must be set to receive its signal from the RCA jacks,
and the TV must be on whatever channel the the VCR outputs its signal on)

Now its connected,
You must now play the movie out the S-Video connector on the PowerBook
Again there are a few ways to do it.....
If you start up the PowerBook with the S-Video cable connected it will
recognize it and use it like a second monitor(dual display). Then using the
"Monitor&Sound" Control Panel select "Arrange" move the Menu Bar to the TV's
monitor(the DVD will only play on the monitor with the menu bar) you may
also have to play with the amount or colors/resolution for it to play. BUT I
believe since you are now running two monitors that you split the video ram
4MB to each screen, and for me its disturbing to have the other monitor on.
But that's a bit confusing and more work, the best way is to not have the
built in screen on at all, that way the S-Video connection is the Only
monitor.
To accomplish that you can do it two ways,
You must have the S-Video cable connected. Connect an external
mouse/keyboard with a powerbutton and use that to start up the system with
lid closed, the LCD will not come on and the video will only go out the
S-Video (this does not work with the new iBooks though, not sure if its just
that it doesn't support keyboards with powerkeys anymore) You can then do
whatever you want using the TV or an external monitor as the only display.
*** WARNING: While Apple says older PowerBook's work with the lid closed
they do not say so with the Lombard or Pismo, I had my HardDrive die after a
week of running Myst III Exile this way and think it may have been the heat
build up.
SO OPEN the lid, the LCD screen will stay off until it restarts or wakes
from sleep, and it may be safer.
The other way is to forget about the keyboard/mouse and just press the
powerbutton and close the lid fast, it will again start up with the LCD off
and once finished booting open the lid and use the trackpad for a mouse
(this does work for the new iBook. OT, Has anyone tried this and SwitchRes
to see what the Max resolutions you can get on an external monitor yet???).
I personally do it this way now but with an external mouse connected so I
can pause it without getting up and walking over to the PowerBook's Trackpad
every time.

Enjoy
