Hi Dave 
The desktop is governed by the startup disk. Where is the image stored? If
the image is stored on the start up disk and the disk is full, then there
wont be any room  for it to open. If this is not the case and the image is
on another drive or partition and its still doing the thing, then I would
suggest that you add a copy not an alias of disk copy to another drive or
partition that has more room and launch it from there and see if that helps.
