Here's the deal:
7 Macs and a PC, an ISDN router and a switch.
Server: G4, 450 mHz, 384 Mb - AppleShare IP 6
Work stations:
2 G4 733 mHz - 9.2 IE
1 G3 3 (B/W) - 9.1 DK
1 9600 9.1 - (DK or IE)
1 8500 9.1 - (DK or IE)
1 PowerBook G3 - 9.1 DK
1 Siemens PC - Windows 2000
And:
Cisco 800 ISDN router
Asant Switch
2 LW Select 360 - serial connections
1 LW 16/600 w. ethernet
1 fairly new Epson inkjet printer (interface not known right now, does USB
make a difference?)
The physical network (ie e-net cables, phonelines and whatever) are already
there, but currently the set up is without a server. The router is
configured and working (thanks God or someone!), 4 Macs (and occasionally
the PB) and the PC are connected to it, and working.
So now my friend bought 2 new G4s, and want to use the "old" G4 as a
server. He and his wife are running a fulltime web design company at home,
and don't really have time to deal with this themselves, but simply can't
find professional help. Even the company they bought the new Macs from (and
that he does business with very frequently) won't take the job. Talk about
a 3rd world Mac country again...
He's a nice guy you know. He's my personal Mac pusher, who gave me a free
8500 and a free PB 1400/G3, and often gives me very good deals on old parts
and stuff he has lying around, so I thought:
Well, with a little help from my friends (that's you guys and gals, you
know ;-)), we should be able to pull this off.
As already mentioned, the physicals are there, and most of the Mac should
be ready. You already know what we have, here's what we'd like to do:
Set up the server with AppleShare IP 6:
We have manuals, is this fairly straight forward, or are there any dos and
dont's to consider?
Have all computers access the net through the router (very likely except
the server, if that's an issue somehow):
This already works, will the server make any difference?
Have all Macs access the server, connect to all printers, share files with
each other and access files on the PC, - access defined as: being able to
move files back and forth.
Have the PC accessing files on the Mac, and accessing at least one LW.
Preferably accessing files directly on the Macs, but he'll settle for
getting access both ways via the server. No need for working with PC files
directly at the server.
Printing ability has low priority (he has a PC inkjet for it), but would be
nice.
That's it, can't come up with more as of now.
Thoughts? Comments? Ideas? Prayers to say? Warnings? Suggestions?
Kindly (ohhh, I'm sooooo niiiice when I need something :-))
Tina - stubborn too...
