Hmmmm. Interesting! I don't think you need a DNS server to do it. OS X
10.0.4 *cannot* connect to non-TCP/IP AppleShare servers. What I've managed
to do (with some instability) is to have OS X 10.0.4 file sharing turned on
and then logging into it with OS 8.1. I had OS X 10.0.4 running on a G3 and
was able to login to the OS X running G3 using a Powerbook 540c (68040 Mac)
and OS 8.1 (Chooser: Apple share). The server just showed up with all the
other servers on the network (of course, there was a DHCP server so
computers automagically got their TCP/IP settings but I don't think that's
necessary).

In a few weeks your problem should be fixed when Apple releases OS X 10.1.
It is rumoured that X 10.1 will add compatibility with the old-style of
networking.

BTW Sometimes the OS X file server flaked out and computers couldn't log in
(something about connection dropped). The only solution I found was to
restart OS X (I couldn't figure out what process to kill, let alone
re-launch it).

Eric.
