Paris....

My first guess is a conflict rather than a hardware problem.  Are you using
USB overdrive or any other USB software besides your 9.1 software?

I used to have problems with my USB on Quake and found out that my USB
three-button software was the problem.  Pulled it, went to an optical Pro
Mouse, and haven't had a problem since......  The problems were the same,
lock-ups, things not working......  USB voodoo......   :))
