So after pulling the entire machine apart (including the daughtercard 
(had some sound problems I neeeded to check the plug...)), and yanking 
the battery to really clear the PRAM, a reconstructed and rebooted 
machine seems to be working fine- using OS9.2. I did change the 
terminator jumper on the scsi drive and clean out all the pci card slots, 
so KNOCK ON WOOD, we seem to be back in business.
