Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel. 
Yes, the decisions made over many years to allow M$ to
dominate the way it does were of a mainly political
nature. 
Without going into too much detail, certain vested
interests saw the potential of "data mining" long
before the term was coined. These interests made it
possible for themselves to tap into the data streams.
The fact that engineers and non-hacker types have
denounced the status quo as being a burden on the
financial health and a brake on innovation doesn't
bother them, at least not yet.
