In another friendly list, the Power Macintosh G4 List, there was a recent
discussion that mentioned "Disk Rescue" twice.  Here's part of that thread

to retrieve lost data, i had a go with "data rescue" and it was the only
program which could "open" my harddisk and read/copy the file to
another. it does not write back to the damaged hd! but you need a second
drive with same or more capacity for the rescue/copy procedure
harddisk toolkit, tech tool & disk warrior failed to "see" & mount the drive
data rescue does work without mounting the volume!!!        James

I'll second that recommendation for Data Rescue - we recovered files
with it from a drive that nothing else would touch.
