There was a lot of talk about this when the beige g3's were released... If I remember correctly it has to do with vibration of the cd player against the housing. It is especially bad depending on what kind of CD you're using. Ie, if it is homemade, unbalanced or even just has an unbalanced CD label it is noiser (gotta remember just how fast those things are spinning, 22-24 times the speed of a normal CD player).
