There was a lot of talk about this when the beige g3's were released... If I
remember correctly it has to do with vibration of the cd player against the
housing.

It is especially bad depending on what kind of CD you're using. Ie, if it is
homemade, unbalanced or even just has an unbalanced CD label it is noiser
(gotta remember just how fast those things are spinning, 22-24 times the
speed of a normal CD player).

I believe there was a mod whereby people were using bits of cardboard or
foam near the sides of the cd drive, which cut it waaaay down, which was on
on xlerate your mac (can't remember the url off the top of my head and
explorer just crashed so I'm using opera at the moment, which for some
reason won't keep any bookmarks...) but if you go to www.macsurfer.com and
