1) Do you have any PCI cards installed?
2) Do you have more than one device using the same driver, such as 2 ATI 
cards or 2 Adaptec cards?
3) Have you tried starting from the CD with the monitor switched off?

That's probably not Open Firmware, btw, but a trap (or, so-called kernel 
panic).
