I had similar problems at my work with printing Illustrator files and an HP printer. Turns out all the problems were due to fact that the HP printer was using emulated postscript. Any HP printer that costs less than 2000 dollars is more than likely using emulated Postscript. We bought a couple of Laserjet 8150N because they use true Postscript. I may be wrong but your problem may be indeed be related to the fact that your HP printer is using Emulated Postscript. Try contacting Quark and see if they have a work around for printing to non-postscript printers.
