Well it's the end of another week, but this one has been a very memorable
week for me. I have seen 3 members of the computer elite, all in the flesh,
in the space of two days!

On thursday (25th) I was luck enough to be able to attend the UK launch of
Windows XP (groans come up from the back of the room ;) ). There i saw
Steve Balmer, CEO and President of Microsoft, do his launch keynote speech.
It almost made up for missing Steve Jobs/Paris Expo, but not quite. I was
also treated to all the business an pro demonstrations, man that was good
fun ;). Having seen all the features and facets of XP and seen it in
action in a lot of tasks I have to say, much as I hate to, that I was very
impressed. Sure MS are going to go out of their way to sway people's
opinion and make it look as good as possible, but I have XP on my PC now
(free trial :) ) and I have to say 'WOW'. It's tidy, fast, reliable (to a
point ;) ) and compatible. We have had a few USB gremlins in it so far but
that's it. I seriously believe Apple have good reason to be very worried
about it, it's going to boost the PC side of the market in business and
home areas. Anyway, enough harping on about that...

On Friday I got yet more excitement! We had two guest lecturers in to talk
to us. They were non other than Doug Engelbart, pioneer of the pointing
device and interlinking of data.
The other speaker was Ted Nelson, who is seen as the father of 'hypertext'
, the power behind the world-wide-web. He's a funny guy and he thinks the
whole way computers are used is dumbed down and wrong. He has a much
better alternative...
Doug's website is at: http://www.bootstrap.org
Ted's site is at: http://www.xanadu.net

Anyone who has an interest in computer evolutio past or present will find
both men's works interesting I'm sure, definitely did.

'It's like an airplane. When you really get down to wanting to fly from
one place to another, it's not very much a free market. You don't get to
bid for the tail and the wing. Somebody puts it together and says, this is
an airplane, I guarantee it, lets go fly'
