I fixed my ethernet problem. The symptom was that after a few ethernet packets, the port just died, a few packets dribbling in. The problem was that I have a cable modem and it binds to the first MAC address it sees. That was my laptop. So I called my cable ISP, RCN, they reset the connection, I put in a NetGear router/switch and presto.
So in my wonderings in search of solution, I thought I might need new ROMS. (I know, dumb idea, but when grasping at straws, anything is fair game.) These are like $100 on EBay. I'm running MacOS X 10.1.3 on my beige rev 1 G3, I've cabled up additional IDE devices (3 soon to be 4). What is the friggin point of spending $100 on new ROMS? Doesn't OS X obviate anything in the rev 3 ROMS? Anyways, I'm quite happy I rejuvinated my G3. It cost less, I learned a lot and the performance is surprisingly good.
