I once bought a "refurbished" or "remanufactured" Apple 1710 AV from
Shreve Systems. I thought it was the COOLest thing I ever had sitting on
my desktop. It was BIG, had great sound (for built-in speakers) had lots
of COOL controls both on the case and in the Control Panels folder, and
I felt on top of the world. I think I paid $349 plus shipping to the
Chicago suburbs. It was great for about two years. It started slowly at
first where it either wouldn't light up or it needed to be jarred.
Eventually, it just wouldn't do anything. I took it to my nearby Apple
service center where I was told after a couple of weeks (They needed to
be prompted after over a week of not calling me.) that it needed a new
motherboard to the tune of $149 plus about $100 labor. So I ponied up
the $250 and got my baby back, along with a warranty. I knew that if I
hadn't done that, it would have just stayed here to be repaired
"someday". So now I felt confident that I would be able to enjoy it into
the distant future. But after about 9 months it began to have the same
troubles, then went dead again. This time, I took it to a local thrift
store and left it there. My beautiful Apple 1710 AV monitor set me back
over $600 for about 3 years usage. I did not feel it was worth the
money.

Right now, I am using an ASTVision 7L monitor that I picked up at
another thrift store for $10! I guess AST no longer makes computers, so
someone upgraded and no longer needed this one. It has no speakers,
needed an adapter ($7), and has lots of controls. It looks great and has
given me no trouble at all. I always prefer Apple products over other
brands. But monitors can be easily adapted to be used on Macs, and are
readily available at good prices. Whenever I do that, I almost feel like
I've accomplished a religious conversion. My ASTVision 7L monitor now
displays the Truth, not just a wInDoZe imitation. ;-)

"Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration
to describe the history of the computer industry
for the past decade as a massive effort to keep up with Apple."
