This seems to have been going around alot lately, so as Co G-List nanny I
am addressing the whole group. Please read this entire post.
The service manuals are not legal for a non-Apple Authorized Technicians to
posses. Apple guards them closely. The links at sites like "Gamba" and
"Wanadoo" are unauthorized links to Apple's FTP site. The links exist so
that Apple authorized Tech's can have online access to the manuals from
their repair facilities. What happens, is that an Apple Authorized Tech
spills the beans on where the links are and then other people post them for
the general public to see, Apple finds this out, gives the host of the links
a Cease and desist order, and moves the links. This has been going on for 6
years or so.
Now. Here's where it gets interesting. I *personally* believe that the
manuals should be available to the general public. I think that Apple
should just release them, and then if you use them and break your
machine...well...that would be your own dang fault, and Apple would void the
warranty on the machine that you wrecked. I feel especially strongly about
the manuals being available for Mac's that Apple no longer supports. I
think it is ridiculous that they guard the manual for an SE/30 so closely,
but they do. So as far as posting manuals goes. It is a "no-no." You will
be warned and then banned if you post direct links to this list. As far as
someone like Kathe posting the group and asking for a manual??? Well, if
you respond offlist and give her a little hint, then it is out of the hands
of Ron Ward and myself, and LEM will be safe. I personally know of an Apple
employee (there used to be 2) that are subscribers to this list, and are
most likely looking for infractions (and I'm not talking about Jeremy
Derr). Adobe does this as well. If LEM (a publicly archived list) were to
be caught posting the links to the service manuals over and over, it could
be a big problem for us all, so please, keep it in private. Thank you.
