   It is possible to buy a PCI modem that is not dependent on Windows 
to operate (Win-modem). However, these modems would have to be 
designed for a Mac to work.  An internal modem doesn't merely act as 
a Com port - it IS a Com port - and that Com port is not in keeping 
with Mac standards.
