I just had a 40 gig IBM Deskstar drive die. It wasn't in my mac, but 
it did fail after about a year of heavy service in my Tivo box. IBM 
gladly replaced it, but they don't do advanced replacements. You are 
not alone. I believe it is the 75XX series Deskstar drives that are 
causing all sorts of problems for many computer users everywhere.
