Geno, It's difficult to say what caused this problem in these two macs. So far as I know, it's not what I would call a common or typical issue. Apple does use (or has in the past used) Maxtor hard drives; they have poor reliability from what I've seen. Quantum (another typical drive for Apple, currently owned by Maxtor) is only moderately better. The most reliable drives Apple has used (for IDE) are IBM and Western Digital. Of course, that doesn't mean that your hard drive was a dud. Diskwarrior often has good luck repairing directory structures (corrupted ones can lead to the problem you described). Usually a bad drive would sound a bit like a marble in a spray can, or just won't spin up in which case you'll see a sad mac. Over the last two years, I had hundreds of macs come in with problems like yours. Most of them, I was able to take care of without loosing data.
