Hi guys,

Just joined this list, got some good topics going here.

I have recently upgraded my biege G3 desktop with an OWC G4 400. It has
given an excellent speed boost to X over the G3 and I've been very pleased
with it. However in OS 9, I get screen corruption. I run 2 displays using an
ATi Radeon and an ATi Mach 64. When I added the G4 both displays behaved
fine. I over clocked to 466mhz for 2 days to see how it went and then went
back to 400mhz. A short while after that I suddenly found that I couldno
longer select an resolution on the 2nd display other that 640x480. The
picture quality was terrible, and then it appeared on my main screen. When I
boot up, the main screen is fine for a while, but after a while the odd line
appears across the screen. Sometimes it stays sometimes it goes... if I move
a window or menu around that gets rid of it. The bizzare thing is that this
doesn't appear in OS X. I can run my main display at 1162x864 and the 2nd
display at 1024x768. I've reinstalled the ATi drivers more than once and
have applied all the latest updates, but with no fix.

What I have noticed is the temp that the G4 runs at. When I boot up, the
XLR8 Control Panel tells me its at about 46 degrees c. When I do 3D stuff it
jumps to about 64 degrees, and under normal running over 2-3 hours or more
its around 53 degrees. To me that seems hot. I have heard that too hot a cpu
can effect graphic display in OS 9. So I was wondering if anyone has any
experience cooling a G4 upgraded biege desktop?? I've looked at some cpu
fans but the heatsink of the biege desktop is small. I can't fit a fan on
top of the processor due to the case closing very close to the top of the
heatsink. I've looked at the motherboard aswell and can't see any points
where I could plug in a small fan of any type.

Maybe I don't need to do this, but I would feel happier if I could cool this
chip a bit more, esp since I want to overclock it again to 466mhz, as it was
very stable when i used it.

Thanks in advance,

Niall Julian
