The new iTunes has a *great* (sarcasm) feature called Crossfade 
Playback, which means fade-in and fade-out which some people really 
love. I'm not one of them--it's really stupid in most Classical music. 
In Preferences, the Effects tab allows you to deselect it (or alter the 
amount). It comes automatically enabled in the recent versions of iTunes.
