not off hand other than the panasonic, but i think there is a hack to
make other drives work, try a web search, or hopefully someone here
remembers where it is.

possibly, but firewire should be ok.

it's definitely part of it, the usb bus is far, far too slow for dvd viewing.

definitely, firewire is fast enough, usb isn't even close.

possibly, but you can't tell until you resolve the bandwidth question,
i.e. try it on a faster bus

doubtful. the apple video player has some lame protection in it but not
much. for example, according to apple you can only watch a dvd on the
video card in the agp slot, when actually you can only watch it on the
"primary" monitor which can be changed.
the usb bus is definately making it totally impossible. try it on the
ide bus if possible, or the firewire bus. i think i've heard there is a
hack to make the apple video player work with other brands. also, i'm
not sure if the g3 is fast enough to do the decoding in software, the
g3's that shipped from apple had a hardware decoder. again, best bet is
to do a web search and check at places like xlr8yourmac.com which has
allot of info on these types of problems. hopefully someone on the list
has experience they are willing to share.
