I second the advice of getting/running DiskWarrior. If you dont have it but
have an OS 8.6 system disk, you could try a reinstall of the OS instead. If
you have neither, get DiskWarrior.
Also try a "zap" of the PRAM ( restart holding down command+option+p+r til
you hear chime 3 times).
Rebuild desktop if you havent already. Disk First Aid was ok?
Can you put back some memory? 64 mb is really skimpy for OS 8.6 and more RAM
may help (although my first mac, a Performa 475, only had 4 mb initially!).
If none of this helps you may have a motherboard problem.

Yes, now I have reset the CUDA switch and checked the PRAM battery, no
problems. I even disconnected all the internal IDE devices and attempted to
run all SCSI (w/proper termination), but that ended it a lockup, too. What I
did find was interesting is that when the computer froze, the power switch
on the motherboard wouldn't work. You had to do the three-fingered salute to
get it to restart. Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated.
