This machine has two ide/ata buses if the machine if revision 2 it can take two ide devices on each cable. If it is not revision 2 it can take 2 on the low bus and only one on the higher bus.
Open the Apple System Profiler (under the apple on the left). Click on the devices and volumes tab at the top of the window. You will notice at the left side ATA 0 and ATA 1. ATA 0 should have your existing hard drive beside the ID=0 (master) label. ATA 1 should have your existing CD-ROM beside the ID=0 (master) label. These are usually both set to master. (I am describing the G3 iMac I am looking at) It is possible this description will be different but the same principles should apply. Now comes the difficult part with WD. If you have revision 2 you can connnect the new drive to ATA 0 or ATA 1. But if you connect to ATA 0 you must set the pins on the second drive to slave and the existing drive you must set to Master with slave (it is probably presently set to master without slave). If you connect the second drive to the ATA 1 bus cable the second drive must be set to slave. Be sure that pin 1 on the cable is next to the power connection. See if this makes any sense to you and ask questions if you need. > >I have another Western Digital Caviar HD that came to me already >initialized for Macs and it works on the G3 I'm using, so I set the >master/slave jumper on the pc drive the same way: on the slave mark. >The G3 says made in 98, so what revision does that make it?
